What Does Proverbs 15:29 Mean?

The LORD is far from the wicked,But He hears the prayer of the righteous.Proverbs 15:29 · NKJV

Quick answer

Wickedness creates distance, and honest people are heard. The verse describes proximity in relational terms, not geography.

Read both lines

The verse revisits 15:8 with the emphasis moved from what God thinks of the offering to whether He is close enough to hear it. "Far" cannot mean literal distance, since 15:3 has already put God's eyes in every place and 15:11 has opened the grave to His sight. The distance is relational, the felt remoteness of a person who has arranged his life against the One he occasionally addresses. The second line is the load-bearing half: God hears. Not weighs, not considers, but hears, which is what anyone praying actually wants to know.

From this side of the cross

This is the verse the gospel answers most directly. "You who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ" (Ephesians 2:13). The distance in line one was real, and it was closed from the other side. The believer prays as one of the near, not as someone auditioning each morning for the right to be heard, and Scripture insists God's nearness runs toward the broken rather than away from them (Psalm 34:18).
