What Does Proverbs 16:19 Mean?

Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly,Than to divide the spoil with the proud.Proverbs 16:19 · NKJV

Quick answer

Given the choice between a low seat among the humble and a share of winnings among the proud, take the low seat.

Read both lines

The temptation is staged honestly: dividing the spoil, the footnote reads "plunder," is the winners' table at the moment the winnings are handed out. Against it, a humble spirit among the lowly: no table, no applause. The placement does half the work: v. 18 has just explained that the proud are walking ahead of a fall, so joining their table means boarding a vehicle the previous verse watched drive toward a cliff. The lowly hold the ground the book keeps promising: the LORD gives grace to the humble (3:34). Choose your table by its trajectory, not its menu.
