Closes the three-verse saying about escalating a dispute, Proverbs 25:8–10.
Quick answer
The person listening becomes the next problem. Once your name is damaged, the verse says, it does not come back.
Read the whole unit
Do not rush to court, keep it between you and him, and here is why: a disclosed secret creates a witness against you, and the damage is permanent.
Read the whole unit
Three verses on a single scenario: a dispute with a neighbor, and the temptation to escalate it publicly before thinking. The NKJV footnotes "court" at verse 8 as literally contend or bring a lawsuit, so this is litigation rather than argument.
The unit's logic runs forward in time, which is what makes it useful. Verse 8 asks what happens in the end if you lose. Verse 9 gives the alternative, which is to handle the matter with the person himself and to keep someone else's confidence out of it. Verse 10 names the cost of getting that wrong, and the cost is not the case. It is your reputation, permanently, because a disclosed secret cannot be recalled.
What the unit is really warning about is the moment a private grievance becomes a public performance. Once it is in the open, other people own it.
What this verse contributes
The finality. The NKJV footnotes the second line as the evil report concerning you not pass away, and the Hebrew is literally that your ill repute will not turn back. That is the strongest word in the unit and it is aimed at the reader rather than the neighbor. Note the reversal too: the man who set out to expose someone else is exposed by a third party who was never part of the dispute. This is the same shape the book uses at 26:27 with the pit and the stone, and the mechanism here is entirely social. Nobody has to arrange it.
