What Does Proverbs 29:4 Mean?

The king establishes the land by justice,But he who receives bribes overthrows it.Proverbs 29:4 · NKJV

Quick answer

Justice is what holds a country up. Bribery does not merely corrupt it, the verse says it tears it down.

Read both lines

The verbs are architectural and opposed: יַעֲמִיד, makes stand, against יֶהֶרְסֶנָּה, tears down, which is the word used of demolishing a building. So the saying is not comparing a good ruler with a mediocre one. It is describing construction and demolition of the same structure.

מִשְׁפָּט is the load-bearing material, the same justice word that runs from 13:23 through chapters 21, 24 and 28, and this verse makes it structural rather than decorative. The second line's phrase is literally a man of offerings, which is the delicate word for it, and the book is unimpressed: whatever he calls the payments, he is taking the building apart. Notice that the verse does not accuse him of injustice in any single case. It says that receiving the payments is itself the demolition, because a court that can be paid has stopped being a court whatever its verdicts happen to be.
