When Jesus said “It is finished,” He announced that the work of dealing with sin was complete, with nothing left for you to add. It was not a cry of defeat but a declaration of victory. The work is done.
The Grace Answer
They were among the last words Jesus spoke from the cross: It is finished. Three words in English, one word in the original, and it was not the whimper of a man giving up. It was a single word that carried the weight of completion: accomplished, brought to its intended end, nothing left owing.
So when Jesus said it, He was not announcing that His suffering was over. He was announcing that the work was done. The debt of sin, yours included, was paid to the last cent. There was nothing left to add, nothing left to earn, nothing still pending.
What it finished
It finished the demand of the law against you. Paul says God wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us... having nailed it to the cross. It finished the sacrificial system, because the one perfect sacrifice had been made. It finished the distance between you and God, tearing the temple veil from top to bottom. And it finished the question of whether you could ever be enough, by making Christ enough on your behalf. It is more than a ledger cleared. Scripture was fulfilled, sin itself was dealt with, the sacrifices found their end, the new covenant was opened, the accusing powers were disarmed, and you were reconciled to God.
It also finished the fear that you might not measure up, because the measuring was done on Christ, and He passed perfectly in your place. There is no exam still waiting for you. The results are already in, and they are His results, credited to your name. This is why grace and striving cannot mix. If the work is finished, then every attempt to complete it by your effort is not humility, it is a quiet denial that His three words were true. You do not add the final touches to a finished work. You rest in it.
A finished work can be added to only by insulting it, as if the Master left something undone that your effort must now supply. He did not. He said the debt was paid, and He meant every cent of it. So the next time you feel the pressure to earn what Christ already secured, hear Him again from the cross. It is finished. Not almost. Not mostly. Not finished if you keep up your end. Finished, full stop, with your name written into the payment.
