Twelve dead staffs spent a night before the Lord. One came back budding, blossoming, bearing almonds. God settles the question of priesthood with resurrection.
The Shadow
After Korah's rebellion, the question would not die: who has the right to stand between the people and God? God ended the argument with a sign no one could dispute. Twelve rods, one per tribe, each a length of dead wood, were laid before the ark overnight. By morning, the rod of Aaron had sprouted, put forth buds, produced blossoms, and yielded ripe almonds: bud, flower, and fruit at once, a whole growing season overnight in a stick with no root. God's chosen priest was identified not by pedigree, argument, or ambition, but by life where life was impossible. The rod went back into the ark as a permanent answer.
The Fulfillment
Hebrews frames the priesthood of Jesus with the same logic. No man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was, and Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest; the Father appointed Him. But where was the sign? Where was the budding rod that settled His right to the office? Hebrews answers: He is a priest not according to a law of fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. The resurrection is the budding. Dead wood, a crucified body sealed in rock and past all hope of root, came back bearing life, and God thereby ended the argument about who stands between humanity and Himself. Declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, Paul says. The tomb was the night before the ark. The third day was the morning.
Him All Along
Your Priest holds His office by indestructible life, which means His right to represent you cannot lapse, be revoked, or die. Every competing claim on the role — including your own attempts to mediate for yourself — was settled the morning the dead wood budded. The question of who stands for you before God is closed, and the answer is alive.
