The Shadow

Every spring, after Passover, Israel brought a single sheaf to the priest. Not the harvest. The first of it, cut from the leading edge of the fields while the rest of the grain still stood. The priest waved that one sheaf before the Lord on the day after the Sabbath, and Leviticus gives the reason in words that carry the whole gospel: to be accepted on your behalf.

No farmer hauled his entire crop to the tabernacle, and he did not need to. The sheaf stood for the field. When God accepted the firstfruits, He was declaring His verdict on the harvest to come. The first was not merely earliest; it was representative. As the sheaf went, so went everything still standing in the ground.

The Fulfillment

Paul reaches for exactly this picture when he announces the resurrection: “But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” He is writing to people wavering on whether the dead are raised at all, and his answer is not simply that Jesus proved resurrection possible. It is that Jesus rose as the firstfruits. The representative sheaf has been waved before God and accepted, while the whole harvest still stands in the field. The timing itself preaches: Jesus rose in the very season the sheaves were being brought, on the morning after the Sabbath. But the weight does not rest on a calendar. It rests on Paul’s chosen word. Each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

Your resurrection, in other words, is not a separate question from His. There is one harvest. The first of it is already standing in glorified life on the other side of death, and He was accepted on your behalf.

Him All Along

Easter was not only His victory; it was your preview. God is not still deciding what to do with the rest of the field. The wave offering has already been received. Because He lives, your resurrection is not a hope you hold anxiously. It is a harvest already guaranteed by its firstfruits.
