Before Adam and Eve left the garden, God promised a Seed who would crush the serpent’s head and be bruised doing it. The first gospel promise in the Bible.
The Shadow
The first promise of redemption in the Bible was not spoken to Adam or Eve. It was spoken to the serpent, as a declaration of war. Before God said a word to the guilty couple about consequences, He told their enemy how the story would end: enmity between your seed and her Seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.
Every detail is strange in the best way. The Seed is hers, in a book that traces lineage through fathers. The victory is certain but not painless: a crushed head for the serpent, a bruised heel for the Champion. He would be wounded in the winning. And the promise comes before anything else. Before the curse on the ground, before the exile, before a single sacrifice or commandment, God announced a Rescuer. Theologians call Genesis 3:15 the protoevangelium, the first gospel. Grace got the first word after the fall.
The Fulfillment
The New Testament never quotes Genesis 3:15 with a fulfillment formula, which is why this entry wears a pattern badge rather than an explicit one. But the trajectory is hard to miss, and the apostles trace it. Paul says that when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman. Hebrews says He took flesh and blood so that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil. The bruised heel was the cross: a real wound, taken in the very act of crushing. And Paul tells the church in Rome, living in the aftermath of that victory, that the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The war announced in Eden was won at Calvary, and believers now stand inside the triumph of the woman’s Seed.
The wound and the win were never in competition. The Seed conquered by being struck. What looked like the serpent’s moment was the serpent’s undoing.
Him All Along
You live on the far side of the crushing. The accuser was not merely pushed back at the cross; he was disarmed. Whatever voice still hisses condemnation at you is quoting a case that has already been thrown out. The promise God made in the garden was kept in full, and it was kept for you.
