Solomon asked how God could dwell in a house at all. Jesus answered a thousand years later: the true temple was never the building. It was the Body.
The Shadow
At the dedication of the most magnificent building Israel ever raised, Solomon stood before the altar and asked the question that hung over the whole project: But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Heaven itself cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! The glory filled the house anyway, and for centuries the temple stood as the address of God among His people: the place of sacrifice, the place of meeting, the one spot on earth where heaven touched down.
But Solomon's question never went away. A building, however glorious, could only host the presence. It could not be the presence. Israel's own prophets kept saying so, and the temple itself kept being lost, profaned, rebuilt, and diminished. The address was real, but it was temporary, and everyone standing in its courts was waiting for something the courts could not deliver.
The Fulfillment
When Jesus cleared those courts, the authorities demanded a sign. His answer sounded like madness: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. They looked at forty-six years of stonework. John tells us plainly what He meant: He was speaking of the temple of His body. Everything the building pointed to had arrived in Person. The place of sacrifice, the place of meeting, the spot where heaven touches earth — a Body, not a building. And when that temple was destroyed on a cross, He raised it in three days, exactly as promised.
Then Paul says the astonishing next thing: Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? The dwelling did not end with the resurrection. It expanded.
Him All Along
You do not travel to the presence of God anymore, and you do not host it by performance. He moved in. Solomon's question has been answered in a way he could not have imagined: God does indeed dwell on the earth — in His Son, and by the Spirit, in you. The address is permanent now, and it is yours.
