What Does Proverbs 14:20 Mean?

The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor,But the rich has many friends.Proverbs 14:20 · NKJV

Read this verse with the one that follows, which answers it.

Quick answer

An ugly fact, stated without approval. Poverty costs people their relationships, and the verse reports that rather than recommending it.

Read both lines

Proverbs does this periodically: it names how the world actually behaves before saying anything about how it should. The NKJV footnotes the second line as literally many are the lovers of the rich, which is more cynical than "friends" and closer to the point. Nothing in this verse endorses the pattern. It is describing a social reality that anyone who has lost money has felt, and it is setting up the next verse, which turns and condemns exactly this behavior. Read alone, verse 20 sounds like the book approves. Read with verse 21, it is a diagnosis before a rebuke.
