This verse belongs to the YHWH run, Proverbs 16:1–9.
Quick answer
Pride of heart, the inward certainty that you answer to no one, is abhorrent to the LORD, and numbers will not save it: even if the proud link arms, the verdict stands.
Read both lines
The offense is located precisely: proud in heart, not confidence or competence, but the interior posture of self-rule, the heart that has quietly crowned itself. The second line answers pride's favorite defense: consensus. "Join forces" is literally "hand to hand," allies joined, and the proverb is unmoved: wrong multiplied is not right, and the LORD does not recount the votes. Within the run this verse pairs with 16:2: the man whose ways are pure in his own eyes, left uncorrected, hardens into the man who is proud in heart.
