What Does Proverbs 17:9 Mean?

He who covers a transgression seeks love,But he who repeats a matter separates friends.Proverbs 17:9 · NKJV

Quick answer

Not broadcasting someone's failure is an act of love. Repeating it is how friendships end, and the verse treats the choice as deliberate.

Read both lines

"Covers" here is the same combination of words used at 10:12, where love covers all sins, and 1 Peter later echoes the phrase: "love will cover a multitude of sins" (4:8). What the verse commends is not dishonesty or the concealment of danger; it is the decision not to circulate what you know about someone's worst moment. The second line names the mechanism of damage with precision. It is not the original offense that separates friends but the repeating, which means the person doing the separating is frequently not the one who sinned.

What it does not mean

Covering a transgression is not covering up abuse, crime, or ongoing harm, and this verse has been used that way in churches. Proverbs is describing discretion between friends about a private failure, not silence about someone being hurt. The same book insists on honest witness (14:25), condemns perverting justice (17:23), and says God takes the side of the oppressed. Where someone is in danger, speaking is the loving act, and a verse about not gossiping does not outrank a person's safety.
