What Does Proverbs 19:5 Mean?

A false witness will not go unpunished,And he who speaks lies will not escape.Proverbs 19:5 · NKJV

The same couplet returns four verses later at 19:9, with a sharper final verb.

Quick answer

Perjury does not stay buried. The verse says it twice, in two ways, and both halves say the same thing on purpose.

Read both lines

This is synonymous parallelism at its plainest: the second line restates the first rather than advancing it, and the repetition is the emphasis. The setting is a courtroom, where a lie is not merely dishonest but load-bearing, since an innocent person's life can rest on it. The chapter keeps returning to this. Verse 9 repeats the couplet, verse 28 names a witness who scorns justice, and verse 29 has the sentence waiting. What the verse does not tell us is the timing, and Proverbs generally will not. It says the lie will not walk away clean; it never says when.
