What Does Proverbs 22:15 Mean?

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.Proverbs 22:15 · NKJV

Companion saying to 22:6, and like it, often mishandled.

Quick answer

Children do not arrive wise: folly comes factory-installed, and loving correction is the tool that loosens the knot. A prescription for real formation, not a license for rage.

Read both lines

The first line makes the observation sentimentalism refuses: foolishness is bound up, knotted, in the heart of a child, resident already, not learned later. What grows untended is the folly already planted. The second line names the remedy in the sages' shorthand: the rod of correction, the era's emblem for real discipline, boundaries with consequences attached. The verse pairs with 22:6 as diagnosis pairs with charge: train the child because the folly is real, and the training works because the child is formable. Correction in this book is always love's instrument, the father corrects the son he delights in (3:12), and its aim is the child's freedom: a person no longer knotted to their own worst impulses.

What it does not mean

The verse gives no cover to fury, violence, or harm. A parent's uncontrolled anger is not "the rod of correction"; this same book says the man who cannot rule his own spirit is a breached city (25:28). Discipline in Proverbs is love's deliberate, measured work, aimed at the folly and never at the child's worth, and households will differ on its wise forms. What the verse actually rules out is the opposite abdication: the home where nothing is corrected because correction costs conflict. Neither rage nor neglect is in this verse. A love that shows up to the hard work of forming is.
