What Does Proverbs 22:6 Mean?

Train up a child in the way he should go,And when he is old he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6 · NKJV

One of the most quoted, most cherished, and most weaponized verses in Proverbs.

Quick answer

Early formation runs deep and lasts long: the grooves cut in childhood tend to guide the whole road. A strong statement about the power of formation. Not a guarantee with a warranty card, and never issued as an audit of the parents of prodigals.

Read both lines

The first line's verb is richer than schooling: dedication, initiation, the deliberate shaping of a person at the age when persons are shapeable, in wisdom's way, the road this whole book maps. The second line states the tendency that makes the labor worth it: the training holds. What is formed early is formed deep; the man of seventy still walks in grooves his childhood cut, which is exactly why the verse urges cutting them well. The book stands behind the charge with its diagnosis: foolishness is bound up in a child's heart (22:15), and the father spent nine chapters doing precisely what this verse commands. Parenting is among the most consequential work a human being does, and its returns arrive across a lifetime, often after the parents can no longer see them.

What it does not mean

Two misreadings have made this verse an instrument of pain. The first turns tendency into guarantee, so every wandering adult child becomes a verdict on the parents. That reading breaks on the book's genre, proverbs observe the grain of the world, they do not sign contracts, and on Scripture itself: the LORD raised Israel and watched her rebel (Isaiah 1:2). Children are persons, not products; between the training and the outcome stands a will God Himself declines to bulldoze. Parents of prodigals do not need an audit; they carry one of the heaviest griefs there is. The second misreading turns the verse into a technique market: right method, guaranteed result. But the verse commends a direction, not a franchise system, and children raised in the same house walk out into different stories. Train because formation is real. Release the outcome to the God who has more history with prodigals coming home than any of us knows.

From this side of the cross

The gospel gives weary parents two things this verse alone cannot: a God who can reach where their training cannot, and a story that is not over. The father in Luke 15 had done his forming, and then he did his waiting, and the road home existed because his house had one. The training is yours. The keeping never was.
