What Does Proverbs 26:10 Mean?

The great God who formed everythingGives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages.Proverbs 26:10 · NKJV

⚑ The NKJV footnotes this verse as "Heb. difficult in v. 10; ancient and modern translators differ greatly." That is the strongest such note in the book, and the word "God" is supplied.

Quick answer

The verse is genuinely obscure and English versions disagree about nearly all of it, including who the subject is. What survives every reading is that hiring a fool has consequences.

Read both lines

The Hebrew is five words and the NKJV renders them as a statement about God rewarding a fool and a transgressor. Other versions read the same consonants as advice about an employer who hires fools and passers-by indiscriminately, which is a completely different sentence.

Why translations differ

Two things are worth a reader knowing here, and both are checkable.

First, the NKJV's translators flagged this verse themselves. Their footnote says the Hebrew is difficult and that ancient and modern translators differ greatly, which is unusually candid and should be taken at face value rather than explained away.

Second, there is no divine name in the Hebrew of this verse. Neither יְהוָה nor אֱלֹהִים appears; "The great God" renders רַב, a word meaning great or much, which other translators take as an archer or a master or read with the following words entirely differently. The catalog does not settle it, exactly as it declined to settle 21:12, where the NKJV also supplied "God." What a reader is entitled to know is that a choice was made, and this expression is debated to a degree that no teaching should rest on it.
