What Does Proverbs 21:12 Mean?

The righteous God wisely considers the house of the wicked,Overthrowing the wicked for their wickedness.Proverbs 21:12 · NKJV

⚑ The chapter's most significant translation decision. The word "God" is not in the Hebrew.

Quick answer

Somebody watches the house of the wicked and it comes down. Who that somebody is depends on a word the translators had to supply.

Read both lines

The Hebrew opens with a participle and an adjective, maskil tsaddiq, and there is no divine name anywhere in the verse. So the subject is either "the righteous one," a human being who observes the wicked man's household and learns from watching it fall, or God Himself, which is what the NKJV chose by adding the word. Both readings have real support and English versions split between them. The reading changes the verse substantially: one is a sentence about paying attention to how things end for people, and the other is a sentence about divine judgment.

Why translations differ

The NKJV's "God" is supplied, not translated. The WLC has neither YHWH nor elohim here, which is verifiable at a glance and worth saying plainly, because a reader comparing translations will find the verse looking like two different sentences. Translators who supply God reason that a human being does not "overthrow" the wicked; translators who do not reason that tsaddiq is this book's ordinary word for a righteous person and that the second verb can describe ruin arriving rather than being administered. This expression is debated, and the catalog does not settle it. What is not debated is that the added word is an interpretive choice, and a reader is entitled to know it was made.
