What Does Proverbs 26:15 Mean?

The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl;It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.Proverbs 26:15 · NKJV

Part of the sluggard run. Nearly the wording of 19:24.

Quick answer

The food is reached and the trip home is too much. The verse repeats a joke the book already told, with the punchline stated rather than implied.

Read both lines

19:24 said he "will not so much as bring it to his mouth again," leaving the reason unspoken. This version supplies it: it wearies him. That small change moves the emphasis from refusal to exhaustion, and exhaustion at a task this small is a stronger claim than stubbornness.

The NKJV footnote records that the ancient versions were unsure of the container, reading bosom or armpit rather than bowl, which changes the staging and not the point. Effort near zero, and still too much. The verse locates the problem in the will and not in the size of the task.
