Part of the five-verse pastoral discourse, Proverbs 27:23–27, and the reason the whole passage exists.
Quick answer
Money runs out and status does not transfer indefinitely. This is the because underneath the command to tend the flocks.
Read the whole unit
The discourse commands attention to the herds, gives this reason, then describes the renewal that follows: seasons, provision, and food for the household.
Read the whole unit
The chapter ends with a five-verse discourse, the only sustained passage in Collection V, and it is a small essay on where security actually comes from.
The argument runs in order. Know your flocks personally (v. 23). Do so because wealth does not last and neither does status (v. 24). The seasons turn and the grass comes back (v. 25). The animals clothe you and buy you land (v. 26). And there is enough milk to feed your household and the servants who work in it (v. 27).
What makes it more than agricultural advice is the reason given in verse 24. The passage is not saying that flocks are safer than money. It is saying that riches and crowns end, while a well-tended living system renews itself, and that the tending is the part you control. The unit is addressed to someone who could be neglecting the herds because he assumes the wealth is the point. It closes on food for other people, which is where the whole passage has been going.
What this verse contributes
The argument. Without this verse the passage is farming advice; with it, the passage is about where security is actually located. Two things are named as temporary, and the second is the sharper: a crown, meaning inherited standing, does not last לְדוֹר וָדוֹר, to generation after generation. The received text carries a small scribal variant in that phrase which changes nothing.
What it is not saying is worth stating. It does not call riches wrong, and it does not promise that flocks will last either. The contrast is between a stock that depletes and a living system that renews if it is tended, and the tending is the reader's part.
