What Does Proverbs 27:25 Mean?

When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself,And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,Proverbs 27:25 · NKJV

Part of the five-verse pastoral discourse, Proverbs 27:23–27.

Quick answer

The cycle turns. Old growth is cut, new growth appears, and the hillside is harvested, which is the machinery the whole passage depends on.

Read the whole unit

Attention to the flocks, because wealth ends, and then this: the seasons do the renewing, and the verses that follow describe what that renewal yields.

Read the whole unit

The chapter ends with a five-verse discourse, the only sustained passage in Collection V, and it is a small essay on where security actually comes from.

The argument runs in order. Know your flocks personally (v. 23). Do so because wealth does not last and neither does status (v. 24). The seasons turn and the grass comes back (v. 25). The animals clothe you and buy you land (v. 26). And there is enough milk to feed your household and the servants who work in it (v. 27).

What makes it more than agricultural advice is the reason given in verse 24. The passage is not saying that flocks are safer than money. It is saying that riches and crowns end, while a well-tended living system renews itself, and that the tending is the part you control. The unit is addressed to someone who could be neglecting the herds because he assumes the wealth is the point. It closes on food for other people, which is where the whole passage has been going.

What this verse contributes

The mechanism, and its order. Notice that the hay goes first and the tender grass only shows itself afterward, which is how pasture works and also how the passage argues: something has to be removed before the new thing is visible. None of this is the owner's doing. He does not make the grass grow or the season turn; he is being told to pay attention to a system that renews without him, which is exactly why verse 24 contrasted it with riches that simply run down.
