What Does Proverbs 20:1 Mean?

Wine is a mocker,Strong drink is a brawler,And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.Proverbs 20:1 · NKJV

Three lines rather than two, and the first two describe the drink rather than the drinker.

Quick answer

The verse gives the bottle a personality and a rap sheet. It is a warning about what alcohol does to a person's judgment, not a rule handed down about whether to touch it.

Read both lines

The craft is in the personification, and it is worth slowing down for. Wine is not called a drink that leads to mockery; it is the mocker. Strong drink is not said to cause brawls; it is the brawler. So the verse hands the substance a character and lets the reader meet him, which is a far more memorable warning than a prohibition would be. Then the third line turns to the person and does something careful: the verb describes being led astray, wandering off course, rather than a single decision. What the verse claims is that this is a thing which takes people somewhere they did not choose to go, and that not seeing this is what it means to be unwise here.

What it does not mean

The verse is not a law, in either direction. Proverbs is not the Christian's rule of life, and this sentence issues no command, permits nothing, and prohibits nothing. It describes a character and lets the reader draw the conclusion, which is how wisdom literature works. Two misuses follow from missing that. It is not a proof text for making abstinence a test of anyone's standing, and it is not neutralized by pointing out that it is not a command. And it must never land as a verdict on someone in the middle of addiction. A person being led astray is exactly who the verse is written to warn and not to sentence, and the book's fuller treatment at 23:29–35 closes with the man asking when he can wake up and go looking for another drink, which is a portrait of someone caught rather than a verdict on him.
